PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide preparation methods of a pseudo-polyrotaxane and a polyrotaxane, capable of controlling the number of penetration of the ring component to the axial molecule with a simple means. SOLUTION: In the method of preparing a polyrotaxane by synthesizing a pseudo-polyrotaxane that is formed by having a straight chain molecule having a functional group on the terminal penetrate through the opening of anα-cyclodextrin molecule and by reacting a block group, which can react with the terminal functional group of the straight chain molecule of the pseudo-polyrotaxane, with that terminal functional group, water and tetrahydrofuran are used as solvents in synthesizing the pseudo-polyrotaxane and their volume ratios are changed.
