A thermoplastic pallet (20A) has a top frame (24A) which comprises bridge parts (25A) that span the openings between columns (28A), into which forks may be inserted for lifting. The plastic bridges (25A) are designed for absorbing horizontal impact loads. Each bridge has several lengthwise impact absorber zones (26A) of differing compliance to horizontal loads. The zones are comprised of vertical ribs which define open or closed cells. The edge of the pallet deck (22A), which is preferably corrugated metal, is spaced apart from the outer edge of the bridge. It is alternatively fastened to the inner edged of the bridge or to a subframe (66) which spaced apart from the inner edge (72) of the frame (24A).
