Provided are a bush bearing device and a rack and pinion steering device for an automobile, using the bush bearing device. The bush bearing device can support with a predetermined rigidity a rack shaft relative to the radial direction, to the axial direction of a pinion. Further, the bearing device can support the rack shaft so that the shaft can move in its axial direction with a low frictional resistance. Also, in the bearing device, an influence of stress release caused by creep deformation and heat history is reduced. The bush bearing (7) has a synthetic resin bush (17) having a circumferential groove (16) in the outer peripheral surface (15) thereof, an endless annular elastic member (18) fitted to the circumferential groove (16) of the bush (17), a pair of inside inner peripheral surfaces (21, 22) disposed on the bush (17) supported on the rack shaft (5) and symmetrical with respect to the axis of the rack shaft, and a positioning means (19) for determining the position of the bush (17) relative to the inner peripheral surface (12) of a gear housing (6) in the direction(B).
