PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable power optical system which can be made thin in a collapsed state and shortened in overall lens length in a photographic state while maintaining excellent optical performance, and an imaging apparatus equipped with the same. SOLUTION: The variable power optical system for forming an optical image of an object with variable magnification on a photodetection surface of an imaging element includes at least a first lens group Gr1 with negative power, a second lens group Gr2 with positive power, and a third lens group Gr3 with positive power in order from an object side, the third lens group Gr3 being composed of two or more lenses. When the power is varied from a wide-angle end (W) to a telephoto end (T), the first lens group Gr1 moves (m1) drawing a track which is convex to an image side, the second lens group Gr2 monotonously moves (m2) to the object side, and the third lens group Gr3 moves (m3) drawing a track which is convex to the object side.
