PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a highly pure fatty acid alkyl ester that has a sufficient reaction rate, can reduce loads on the environment due to washing drains, can be produced at a low production cost by a simple production process, and can be used as a diesel fuel. SOLUTION: The method for producing the fatty acid alkyl ester comprises performing a transesterification reaction between a fat and a straight or branched chain alcohol having a carbon atom from 1 to 4 in the presence of an alkali metal salt of a phosphoric acid.
