The present invention relates to a porous membrane wherein said porous membrane comprises an isotropic bulk matrix in the form of an open polymer network and at least one surface layer, which surface layer is a perforated continuous layer of which the average surface pore diameter is between 0.02 and 1.2 µm, and the thickness of said surface layer is smaller than the thickness of said bulk matrix. The invention further relates to image recording materials, in which these porous membranes are used.
