An LCD is provided to maximize the brightness in a white state and prevent the leakage of light in a black state, thereby improving the contrast ratio, by forming a polarizing plate to include a blocking film for blocking the leakage of light in the black state. An upper substrate(11) and a lower substrate(12) are bound to each other. Liquid crystal molecules(40) each having a positive dielectric anisotropy are arranged between the upper and lower substrates. Upper and lower alignment layers(21,22) are respectively on the upper and lower substrates, and align the liquid crystal molecules in a horizontal direction. Upper and lower polarizing plates(31,32) are respectively coupled with the upper and lower substrates, wherein each of the polarizing plates has a polarizing film. The upper polarizing plate or the lower polarizing plate includes a blocking film for blocking the leakage of light in a black state. |
