A portable computer and a controlling method thereof are provided to prevent a rapid brightness from being changed when brightness is adjusted in an LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) panel while saving power consumed in lamps for lighting the LCD panel. The first and second lamp(11a,11b) emits light to the LCD panel(10). The first and second lamp driver(12a,12b) respectively supplies the power needed for driving the first/second lamp. A brightness adjuster(14) outputs a brightness adjusting signal for adjusting the brightness of the LCD panel through a system management bus. A controller(13) makes the first/second lamp driver turn off the first lamp and adjust the brightness according to the brightness adjusting signal in case that the received brightness control signal is within the first brightness range. When the first lamp is turn on or off, the controller makes the second lamp controller increase or decrease the brightness according to brightness decrease or increase caused from turn-on/off the first lamp.
