The reaction of a nitrile of formula (2) with water in the presence of a noble metal catalyst, such as a platinum complex of dialkyl- or diaryl-phosphine oxides, to form an amide of formula (3) is useful in the synthesis of steroidal compounds such as eplerenone: wherein the dotted line represents a single bond, a double bond, or an epoxy-bond.
