PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a novolak type phenol resin, with which curability of a random novolak type phenol resin is improved and a high-melting high-ortho novolak type phenol resin is produced without going through a specific reaction process and to obtain a composition comprising the novolak type phenol resin and hexamethylenetetramine. SOLUTION: The method for producing a novolak type phenol resin comprises reacting a phenol with an aldehyde in the presence of manganese borate or manganese borate and boric acid in the molar ratio [(formaldehyde)/(phenol)] of a formaldehyde to a phenol of 0.5-0.7. The curable resin composition comprises the novolak type phenol resin obtained by the production method and hexamethylenetetramine. COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI
