<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device for realizing a reflective display and a transmissive display by using a lateral electric field driving mode. <P>SOLUTION: Light reflecting pixel electrodes 6 and a common electrode 7 are formed on a first substrate 1. A polarizing layer 8 is formed on the first substrate 1 so as to cover the pixel electrodes 6 and the common electrode 7. A second substrate 2 is placed opposite to the first substrate 1, and a liquid crystal layer 3 containing liquid crystal molecules with an aligning direction parallel to a principal surface of the first substrate 1 is held between the first substrate 1 and the second substrate 2. A first polarizing plate 4 with a transmission axis nearly parallel to that of the polarizing layer 8 is disposed on the side of the first substrate 1 opposite to the side of disposition of the liquid crystal layer 3. A second polarizing plate 5 with a transmission axis nearly orthogonal to the transmission axes of the polarizing layer 8 and the first polarizing plate 4 is disposed on the side of the second substrate 2 opposite to the side of disposition of the liquid crystal layer 3. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI |
