<p>The method involves specifying a reference value for an output variable of a drive unit and changing the value dependent on a reducing requirement and on a load which is to be compensated. A ratio of a priority requirement for the change of the value based on the load to another priority requirement for the change of the value based on the reducing requirement is variably selected for different operating conditions of the unit. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling a drive unit.</p>
