PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a laser ignition device and a laser ignition method for an internal combustion engine compacting the internal combustion engine including an ignition device and reducing cost by reducing laser output with securing sure laser ignition. SOLUTION: In the laser ignition device for the internal combustion engine radiating pulse laser beam in high temperature high pressure air fuel pre-mixture or stratified air fuel mixture in a cylinder of the internal combustion engine by a laser radiation means to generate break down, making laser energy absorbed by generated plasma and igniting air fuel pre-mixture or stratified air fuel mixture in the cylinder, the laser radiation means characterized by setting pulse width of laser radiated in the cylinder to a pulse width of minimum ignition input energy.
