PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a video camera unit capable of surely photographing an object whose behavior is unknown by the use of an infrared emitting function used for nocturnal shots, and to provide a monitoring device using the same. SOLUTION: The monitoring device 40A is equipped with the photographing lens 11 of a video camera unit 1A, an infrared emitting unit 23A, a remote-controlled light receiving unit 24A, and a mirror 50 located in front of the remote-controlled light receiving unit 24A. A monitoring infrared ray Lc different in properties from a dark space irradiating infrared ray La is emitted from the infrared emitting unit 23A which is originally used for emitting the dark space irradiating infrared ray La and projected toward the mirror 50, the monitoring infrared ray Lc reflected from the mirror 50 is received by the remote-controlled light receiving unit 24A, the monitoring device detects that the remote-controlled light receiving 24A is screened out by a certain screening object T so as not to sense the monitoring infrared ray Lc and drives recording media so as to record the screening object T.
