PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a bag breaking machine which is constituted of one rotary shaft cutter by simplifying constitution of the bag breaking machine for breaking various kinds of bag bodies and which has constitution for eliminating the fault of torn bag pieces after breaking the bag to be tangled with the cutter and to provide the driving method of the bag breaking machine. SOLUTION: A pair of cutters (rectilinear cutters) are arranged in the diameter direction to the rotary shaft and a plurality of movable side cutters are arranged while shifting them by 90°, for example, in the rotary shaft direction. Further bar-shaped catchers which have spring action and are formed of a bar material facing the movable side cutters from a horizontal direction are arranged at predetermined intervals. By executing swinging drive of the cutters without rotation, a bag body packed with cans, bottles or the like, for example, can be efficiently caught and broken and broken bag pieces can be easily separated from the cans, the bottles or the like without entanglement of broken bag pieces with the rotary shaft.
