<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a composite optical fiber in which a multi-core fiber having a number of cores is formed around a large diameter fiber and which is suitable for the use of infrared rays. <P>SOLUTION: In this composite optical fiber, in which the multi-core fiber 5 having a number of cores 6 is formed around the large diameter fiber 2. The core 3 of the large diameter fiber 2 is made of a pure fused quartz, the clad 4 of the large diameter fiber 2 is made of quartz based glass having a lower refractive index than the pure fused quartz, the cores 6 of the multicore fiber 5 are composed of quartz based glass to which GeO<SB>2</SB>is added, and the clad 7 of the multicore fiber 5 is composed of pure fused quartz or quartz based glass having a lower refractive index than the pure fused quartz. It is desirable that the quartz based glass having a lower refractive index than the pure fused quartz contains fluorine as a dopant. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2006,JPO&NCIPI</p> |
