PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an urban traffic system capable of implementing the flexible operation of a vehicle in a city in accordance with the number of passengers and their destinations and also reducing construction cost. SOLUTION: The urban traffic system is equipped with a one-way circulating track 1 built overhead, a plurality of stations 2 arranged along the track 1, a number of isolated vehicles 3 traveling on the track 1, and a spacing control means to allow adjoining vehicles 3a and 3b fore and aft to travel at random time intervals while an inter-vehicle space D is kept to a certain distance or longer or to a speed-complying safety distance or longer. The track 1 has a single track 1 and a double track 6 branching and converging before and after the specified station 2, and is arranged so that the vehicle 3 stops at the station 2 specified by the passenger 8 of the vehicle 3 by operating a switch.
