PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface coated cutting tool reconciling toughness and wear resistance of the cutting tool in a high performance and suppressing film chipping, in particular. SOLUTION: This cutting tool is provided with a substrate and a film formed on the substrate. The film becomes an outermost layer on the substrate and has compressive stress. The compressive stress changes to have a strength distribution in a thickness direction of the film. In the strength distribution, the compressive stress on the surface of the film continuously increases from the surface of the film to a first intermediate point located between the surface of the film and the bottom surface of the film, has a maximum point at the first intermediate point, continuously decreases from the first intermediate point to a second intermediate point located between the first intermediate point and the bottom surface of the film, has a minimum point at the second intermediate point, and has one or more of the same maximum points between the second intermediate point and the bottom surface of the film.
