The device (2) receives signals measuring information related to an internal combustion engine (1), from an oil level sensor (9) installed in an oil tank. The sensor measures characteristics e.g. viscosity, conductivity, temperature and permittivity, of engine oil (8). The device generates control signals for an injector (12) and a spark plug (13) which influence the operation of the engine, based on the oil characteristics.
