PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display device using a cholesteric liquid crystal, with which a gray scale is displayed and further in which contrast is not lowered, and to provide a large display device using the same. SOLUTION: The display device is equipped with a display device 111 using the cholesteric liquid crystal, a characteristics determining part to determine whether image data displayed on the display device 111 include three or more gray scales, and a characteristics determining part to determine the driving conditions of the display device 111, using a first characteristic of the cholesteric liquid crystal, when the image data include three or more gray scales as decideded by the characteristics deciding part, and using a second characteristic of the cholesteric liquid crystal in the case the image data include less than three gray scales.
