PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type image display device capable of preventing the unevenness of luminance of a projected image. SOLUTION: An aperture plate 60 has a bolt 66 inserted through a long hole 64 and is held freely movably. The aperture plate 60 cuts a part of illuminating light so as to reduce the quantity of illuminating light with which an area is irradiated wherein luminance of a projected image is raised due to mixture of flat light, and makes the luminous flux density of illuminating light with which a light receiving surface of a DND 26 non-uniform is irradiated. Though image luminance of the area wherein flat light is mixed, out of the projected image is raised, the unevenness of luminance of the projected image can be prevented because the quantity of illuminating light with which this area is irradiated is reduced by the aperture plate 60. The aperture plate 60 is moved to adjust a light shielding range of illuminating light so as not to cut effective illuminating light while preventing the unevenness of luminance.
