<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique for optimizing transmission conditions to achieve large-capacity transmission, and also to provide peripheral techniques for putting optical multiplexing that makes large-capacity transmission possible into practical use. <P>SOLUTION: An optical transmitter 100 sets a relation between a signal optical wavelength λ<SB>s</SB>and a zero dispersion wavelength λ<SB>0</SB>to e.g., λ<SB>s</SB><λ<SB>0</SB>to cause wavelength dispersion and a dispersion value D of a dispersion compensation unit 112 at a receiver side is set to D>0 to carry out dispersion compensation.
