PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for forecasting the natural attenuation capacity of polluting materials, capable of forecasting the decomposing capacity of the polluting materials surely in a good accuracy regarding the natural attenuation capacity in a natural state, and also forecasting the biological decomposing capacity by adding a consideration on a newly formed decomposition-produced materials in the process of the decomposition of the polluting materials. SOLUTION: This method for forecasting the natural attenuation capacity by detecting dechlorinating bacteria having a capacity of decomposing organic chlorine compound presenting and contained in treating subjects such as soil or underground water is provided by feeding an organic acid and a sustained release type electron-donating substance such as a biodegradable plastic, etc., to the treating subjects, propagating the dechlorinating bacteria, then detecting the bacteria by a PCR method, etc., by taking a peculiar gene sequence of the bacteria as a target, and judging the natural attenuation capacity of the treating subjects by the presence or absence of the bacteria.
