The invention relates to a method and a device for detecting obstacles and/or traffic participants. An object (3) which is to be recognised comprises at least one individual centre of reflection (31, 32). Distance, relative speed and the capture angle in relation to the object can be determined from measuring signals based on reflections at the individual centre of reflection (31, 32). The measuring signals are statistically evaluated. Evaluation consists in comparing an actual variation of the measuring signals and an anticipated value of the variation based on an actual movement.
