A method and apparatus for replacing existing ballast water in the ballast tanks (2A-6B) of a ship (1) while the ship (1) is underway in the sea utilizes a seawater inlet port (14) in the bow of the ship (1) that admits water when the ship (1) is moving to produce a pressure that is greater than the pressure of the ballast water is to be replaced, with the incoming seawater from the inlet port (14) being directed into the bottom portion of the ballast tanks (2A-6B) where it rises to displace the existing ballast water from outlet ports (37) in a top portion of the ballast tanks (2A-6B).
