PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a methane fermentation apparatus in which a fermentation tank can be operated under heavy load by inexpensively measuring the activity change of an anaerobic microbe in the fermentation tank in real time without poisoning the anaerobic microbe with hydrogen sulfide and properly and continuously controlling the load imposed on the fermentation tank on the basis of the measured value, and to provide a method for operating the methane fermentation apparatus. SOLUTION: The method for operating the methane fermentation apparatus includes: branching a part of the biogas to be discharged from the fermentation tank 35 before entering a desulfurization column 36; desulfurizing the branched biogas by a desulfurizer 41, then measuring the carbon dioxide concentration of the desulfurized biogas by a diaphragm carbon dioxide densitometer 42: and comparing the measured value with a predetermined value of the carbon dioxide concentration and decreasing or increasing the load imposed on the fermentation tank 35 when the measured value is higher or lower than the predetermined value.
