A therapy apparatus (10) for treating a patient's brain (20) is provided. Th e therapy apparatus (10) includes a light generator (40) having an output emission area positioned to irradiate a portion of the brain (20) with an efficacious power density and wavelength of light. The therapy apparatus (10 ) further includes an element (50) interposed between the light generator (40) and the patient's scalp (30). The element (50) inhibits temperature increase s at the scalp (30) caused by the light.
