<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus which can reliably collect/eliminate residual toner even when the charge state (polarity) of the residual toner changes depending on the kind or the carrying speed of a recording sheet. <P>SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus 10 is equipped with: an image carrying body 26 where an electrostatic latent image is formed by the difference in the electrification potential on the surface; an image forming means 22 to form a toner image on the surface of the image carrying body 26; transfer bodies 34, 36, 38 where the toner image on the image carrying body 26 is transferred; a final transfer body 72 to transfer the toner image from the transfer body 38 to a recording medium S; cleaning bodies 44, 54, 64 to come into contact with the transfer bodies 34, 36, 38, respectively; and a controlling means to control the potential gradient among the image carrying body 26, the transfer bodies 34, 36, 38, the final transfer body 72 and the cleaning bodies 44, 54, 64.
