Use in the manufacture of a medicament of an effective amount of an agent sufficient to down-regulate a membrane ion channel functional activity of an HIV infected mammalian host cell, for reducing, retarding or otherwise inhibiting the functional activity of HIV, wherein said membrane ion channel is a Vpu ion channel.
