PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To mount a first optical element such as surface emission-type laser and a photodiode and a second optical element such as a mirror with high accuracy at a low cost. SOLUTION: A compound optical element has a first optical element substrate on which a first optical element which performs conversion of light and electricity and a second optical element substrate where a second optical element which shapes light emitted from the first optical element or light made incident on the first optical element. The compound optical element is characterized in that when substrate faces of the first optical element substrate and the second optical element face are stuck to each other, the side face of the first optical element substrate and the side face of the second optical element substrate are nearly on an identical plane.
