The arrangement has a hydraulically operable control element (1) for changing the valve lift connected to an oil line (2), whereby applying oil under pressure to the control element can be controlled by a switching valve (4) in the oil line connected to a controller (3). An oil pressure measurement device (5) in the oil line is connected to the controller and an arrangement for detecting the time between driving the switching valve and a characteristic change in the oil pressure. An independent claim is also included for the following: (a) an internal combustion engine with an inventive arrangement.
