PURPOSE: An apparatus and method are provided to efficiently use the output of an A/C adaptor by comparing the preset reference voltage and the output voltage of the A/C adaptor and controlling the volume of the charging current applied to a battery. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus comprises an A/C adaptor(10) for applying battery charging current and power for operation of a system load(12); a voltage detection unit(20) for detecting the voltage output from the A/C adaptor; a voltage comparing unit(21) for comparing the voltage output from the A/C adaptor and the preset reference voltage; and a charge control unit(16) for decreasing or increasing the volume of battery charging current by varying the on/off cycle of the switch mounted on the front end of the battery in accordance with the result of comparison.
