PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To highly accurately perform servo control over a patterned medium of a high recording density. SOLUTION: A recording medium 1 is provided with a recording area 2 in which recording tracks 21 constituted by arraying ferromagnetic dots 2101 or ferromagnetic dot groups magnetically separated from one another in a first direction 41 are arrayed in a second direction 42, and a control area 3 placed adjacently to the recording area 2 in the first direction 41 to hold servo information. In the control area 3, a first part 301 constituted by arraying ferromagnetic dots 3101 magnetically separated from one another and a second part 302 in which no ferromagnetic dots 3101 are present are alternately arrayed in the second direction. In the first part 301, at least one of the ferromagnetic dots 3101 in contact with a boundary between the first and second parts 301, 302 has a shape in which a part of the boundary side is lacked from the shape of the ferromagnetic dot 3101 positioned apart from the boundary.
