An illumination control device which ensures the long life of an LED and feedback-controls an illumination unit using the output signal of a light receiving element provided in association with the illumination unit to thereby keep a constant brightness. Or, an image picked up by a camera is image-processed to thereby calculate brightness on a screen and feedback-control an illumination unit so as to keep the brightness at a constant level. Alternatively, an illumination unit is feedback-controlled so as to keep a constant brightness based on a recognition rate when characters in a camera-shot image are recognized.
