PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a nematic liquid crystal composition having a high upper limit temperature (T<SB>→N</SB>) of a liquid crystal phase, a low lower limit temperature (T<SB>N-I</SB>) of a liquid crystal phase, and a wide liquid crystal phase temperature range. SOLUTION: The nematic liquid crystal composition comprises an indane compound represented by formula (I) and a specified liquid crystal compound. Because of its wide liquid crystal phase temperature range, the nematic liquid crystal composition is very useful for use in active matrix liquid crystal display elements capable of coping with outdoor or vehicle-mounted use where they are used at widely varying temperatures.
