PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a capsule type endoscope having superior brightness and light distribution property, preventing thermal load from applying to an image pickup element and enabling its miniaturization and function enhancement. SOLUTION: A capsule part 2 comprises a body 3 and an observation-side cover 4 and has an observation optical part 6, a lighting part 7, a plurality of peripheral circuit components 8a, 8b and 8c and a power supply part 9 supplying the power. The lighting part 7 comprises a lighting substrate 21 disposed in the outer circumferential side of a lens frame 14, an EL (Electro-Luminescent) element 22 formed of a thin film or a thick film and various types of electronic components 23 and 24 forming a light emission control circuit. The EL device 22 is formed or disposed on the whole surface of the lighting substrate 21. The EL element 22 planarly emits light, so that an illumination light with even brightness uniformly lights a subject, the optical image of the subject is focused on the image pickup element 13, and an endoscopic image taken by the capsule type endoscope 1 is displayed on a screen on a display device.
