PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display device and a display method that can reduce power consumption without deteriorating display picture quality, specially, lowering luminance. SOLUTION: Gradation levels of image data of red, green, and blue are detected for every sub-frame and the intensity of light incident on a liquid crystal panel and the transmissivity are adjusted according to detection results. The transmissivity of the liquid crystal panel is maximized for the respective sub-frames of red, green, and blue and the intensity of the incident light is reduced according to the adjustment result of the transmissivity. The quantity of light incident on a display element is kept necessarily irreducible and while display images of respective colors corresponding to gradation levels are maintained, the power consumption of a back light is minimized.
