PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for displaying capacity of a file and a residual amount of a memory are provided to efficiently manage a memory unit by storing files according to attributes of the files and displaying the capacity of the files and a residual amount of a divided memory area according to the attributes of the files. CONSTITUTION: A memory unit(400) is divided into a plurality of memory areas(410,420,430,440) designated by pointers according to attributes of files to be stored. An interface unit receives an input signal from an external input device for controlling operations of an image and sound recording/reproducing apparatus. A control unit divides the memory unit into the memory areas according to the attributes of the files to be stored, confirms an extension of each file if receiving a file save request signal, and stores the file at the divided memory areas according to the confirmed extension, and separately displays the capacity of the files and a residual amount of the divided memory area. |
