<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a packet switching device capable of switching packets smoothly and quickly without losing the continuity of packets after being output. <P>SOLUTION: In this packet switching device, frame detecting sections 3, 4 detect head storing positions FP<SB>1</SB>, FP<SB>2</SB>and tail storing positions LP<SB>1</SB>, LP<SB>2</SB>in each frame of packet strings PS<SB>11</SB>, PS<SB>21</SB>. A switching section 8 switches a plurality of packets from packet strings PS<SB>13</SB>, PS<SB>23</SB>to constitute an output packet string PS<SB>3</SB>and output it, according to a control signal S<SB>C3</SB>generated based on a switching trigger signal S<SB>CT</SB>, the positions FP<SB>1</SB>, FP<SB>2</SB>and the positions LP<SB>1</SB>, LP<SB>2</SB>, and the section 8 inserts an invalid packet IP generated in an invalid packet generating section 7 when an invalid period occurs.
