PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a clamping apparatus, which can improve its working efficiency by making unnecessary complicated setting work for clamping positions according to the size of workpieces, the wear of each structural components, etc. SOLUTION: A workpiece W is clamped between a first clamping arm 2 attached to an arm turning shaft 5 and a second clamping arm 3 by turning the first clamp arm 2 by means of a driving mechanism 6 composed of a worm wheel 10 attached to the arm turning shaft 5, a worm 11 supported by a relay frame 14, and a first driving source 12. The relay frame 14 deflects due to the reaction force in clamping by a certain angle. Torque is applied to the relay frame 14 in the opposite direction of the reaction force by means of a clamping force applying mechanism 7. As a result, the torque in the clamping direction is generated on the arm turning shaft 5 via the worm 11 and the worm wheel 10, and the clamping force is applied to the first clamping arm 2.
