PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image recording apparatus capable of preventing an image signal from being erroneously erased by overwrite in the midst of storing the image signal being picked up at present when a user does not desire erase of the image signal having already been recorded on a recording medium such as a magnetic tape. SOLUTION: A digital video 100 being the image recording apparatus is provided with: a CCD 101 for applying photoelectric conversion to an image picked up by an imaging apparatus (not shown) and using the result for an input signal; a signal detection circuit 109 for detecting the presence/absence of a reproduction signal recorded on a magnetic tape 106; a recording circuit 111 for recording the reproduction signal on the magnetic tape 106; and a system controller 113. In the case that the system controller 113 is set to an input start mode and the signal detection circuit 109 does not detect the reproduction signal recorded on the magnetic tape 106, an overwrite preventing mode is turned off, and the recording circuit 111 records an input signal on the magnetic tape 106.
