PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydraulically driven material testing machine which reduces drastically the power consumption in comparison with a conventional material testing machine. SOLUTION: A pump driving motor 93 of a hydraulic source (a hydraulic unit) 9 for supplying a hydraulic oil to a hydraulic actuator 2 has a variable rotational frequency. The power consumption is reduced by automatically changing the rotational frequency of the motor 93 in response to each state from a test preparation to a test end of the material test machine, rotating the motor at a low speed in a state during the test preparation in which a flow rate of the hydraulic oil is not required and rotating the motor at a high speed only when the flow rate of the hydraulic oil is required.
