PURPOSE: A method for setting an interface in an ATM-based MPLS(Multi Protocol Label Switching) system is provided to dismount forwarding engines of a system performing an LSR(Label Switching Router) role, and to set an interface between a subscriber interface and a system controller, thereby reducing cost of system maintenance and management. CONSTITUTION: If a system operator inputs an interface connection setup command to set an interface(S50), a routing/signaling controller inputs a signal for showing whether a system is mounted from forwarding engines, and decides whether the forwarding engines are mounted on the interface to be set(S51). If so, an interface connection is set between a subscriber interface and the forwarding engines(S52). If the forwarding engines are not mounted on the interface to be set, the interface connection is set between the subscriber interface and the routing/signaling controller(S53).
