摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal optical element which has superior productivity and element characteristics and requires no polarizing plate and a three-dimensional image display device equipped with the same. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal optical element is equipped with a couple of substrates 10 and 20 and a liquid crystal layer 30 which is provided between the substrates and includes liquid crystal molecules 31 and dichroic pigments 32, and has a plurality of unit areas each defined by the couple of electrodes 12 and 22 which face each other across the liquid crystal layer 30. In each of the plurality of unit areas, a liquid crystal layer 30 has, within a range nearly 1/2 time as large as the wavelength of visible light along a direction parallel to substrate surfaces of the couple of substrates 10 and 20, a 1st liquid crystal area 30a and a 2nd liquid crystal area 30b wherein azimuth angle directions of alignment directions of the liquid crystal molecules 31 form nearly 90°when no voltage is applied between the couple of electrodes 12 and 22.
