The lock (34) for a French door or window (12) sliding in a fixed frame (14) consists of a stop (114) with a vertical surface (112) fixed to the fixed frame's bottom guide rail (24) at a distance from the frame upright, and a transverse rod (110) connected to a mechanism (130, 136) on the door/window that moves it vertically to engage with the stop and act as a bolt. In the locked position the ends of the transverse rod are held within side members of the fixed frame, while the moving frame has guides to position it against the stop.
