PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a controller of a belt type continuously variable transmission improving the durability of a belt by increasing the accuracy in determining the belt slipping.

SOLUTION: The generation of belt slipping is determined when a state that a primary rotating speed Npriis more than a value obtained by multiplying a maximum change gear ratio of a mechanism by a secondary rotating speed Nsec, continues for a specific time, and the belt protection control is performed for setting the torque limitation of an engine.
