Document filtering system in which documents are filtered according to the user (16a) inputs or responses, comprises: means (24) for calculating the relevance of documents with respect to the needs expressed by the user using a semantic reference network comprising an assembly of concepts and semantic links; and means for selecting the most relevant documents with means for modeling other users knowledge of the documents and means for fusing the semantic reference network with the subjective semantic networks of other users. An Independent claim is made for a method of cooperative filtering to locate documents of interest to a user.
