PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a communication system in which an originating call is processed preferentially even when an originating call and a terminating call collide with each other. SOLUTION: When a call is originated, a circuit is closed (ST1), a timer T<SB>1</SB>is set and dial tone detection is carried out until the timer T<SB>1</SB>is up (ST2, ST3, ST7). If the dial tone is not detected, a timer T<SB>2</SB>is also set and CNG signal detection is carried out until the timer T<SB>2</SB>is up (ST8, ST9, ST11). When the CNG signal is detected, a decision is made that a terminating call is present and the circuit is released for a specified time (ST10). Thereafter, the flow returns back to step ST1, the circuit is closed, the dial tone is detected from the circuit (ST3), the dial pulse of a previous originating call is transmitted (ST4), FAX transmission is carried out (ST5), and originating FAX data is transmitted preferentially.
