PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an external preparation for the skin which has an excellent humectancy and exhibits excellent effect on prevention and amelioration of chapped skin. SOLUTION: An extract of a plant of the family Thelypteridaceae is found as the result of keen research of various substances in order to find an active ingredient having an excellent humectancy and excellent effect on prevention and amelioration of chapped skin. The external preparation for the skin which has an excellent humectancy and exhibits excellent effect on prevention and amelioration of chapped skin is obtained by formulating an external preparation for the skin with the extract of the plant of the family Thelypteridaceae.
