The device has a motor (1) to generate a rotary movement, transmitted via a transmission (2) to a compressor (3) to generate compressed air from ambient air. Air generated is initiated on a demand by a control unit (5). The transmission has variable RPM, and acts with the control unit to adapt the transmission RPM to the compressed air demand. Demand is determined by a mechanical or electric pressure sensor (7) to measure the actual pressure. The sensor is connected to the control unit, which signals a compressed air demand for control of the transmission, when the actual pressure falls below a pre-defined reference pressure.
